There is no new thing under the sun. I think I read it on the back of a cereal box or heard it in a car ad. That being said… the movement of the moment seems to be a , Rough Trade yard sale with a jesus and Mary Chain BBQ after. I guess there are worse trends: Rush + Santana + King Crimson= Mars Volta.Over-the-hill singers doing standards, Elvis Costello marrying Diana Krall, that whole American Idol thing, putting my passport in the washing machine, dreams of being eaten by wolves, gray hair and bad hats… but i saw…

Johnny Jah – Pooplist 03 As I was thinking of my list I was wondering where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday that I wrote last years’, and the years’ before list. I now have to check for the date of issue on the CDs because some of the material I can’t remember what year it came out. Some times I don’t even know what day of the week it is..but I digress Oh well, who cares? Not you. So here goes. The Best Album Cover. .. Too bad I could not find this sucka in vinyl,…

1. WANT ONE – Rufus Wainwright A bucket of rhymes he threw up threw up somewhere. Big, bold and beautiful. 2. SOME DEVIL – Dave Matthews Sweet, sad and soulful. 3. A MARK, A MISSION, A BRAND, A SCAR – Dashboard Confessional “…like you meant it and I knew that you meant it.” 4. YOU ARE FREE – Cat Power “Cool hands from the get go can feast on the real one….” 5. KIMI GA SUKI / RAIFU – Matthew Sweet “rocket with a heart”. 6. LLOR N KCOR – Ryan Adams I’m spinning ‘round the room in awe. This…

Greetings to all. Sorry, to those who felt otherwise, but it was a very average year in music. Not to say we didn’t have a wide selection to choose from, but I don’t expect much to stand the test of time. Perhaps I didn’t put in the required listening time this year, but nothing jumped out and told me that it will be soothing my soul for years to come. Don’t feel sorry for me. I was always cynical, yet somehow I can still manage to find a few records to spew about. And as usual, I’m 5 minutes away…

Turbines to Power! Rockets to Speed! DAS LIED DER DEUTSCHEN What does it say about me that I chose as my album of the year a Kraftwerk record that was made in 1983 and has been sitting on a shelf for 20 years? Florian und Rolf have either been tweaking the thing all this time or they just got tired of it or maybe they needed the money. Note that they still haven’t written any new songs since 1986, except for Expo 2000. Nice way to make a living. But the thing was continually on my stereo. No other electro…

The following is not a top ten, but just a list of some records that I enjoyed enough to listen to several times. It’s also not in any particular order. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fever to Tell Evanescence: Fallen The White Stripes: White Blood Cells Chevelle: Wonder What’s Next Ryan Adams: Rock & Roll, Love is Hell parts 1 & 2 The Shins: Chutes too Narrow Johnny Cash: The Man Comes Around Longwave: The Strangest Things The Mars Volta: De-loused in the Comatorium Howie Day: Stop all the World Now Third Eye Blind: Out of the Vein The Strokes: Room on…

It was a pretty good year to be in the garage. Garage music hit mainstream although it will probably be back in the garage in a couple of years so enjoy it while you can. There were plenty of great songs although not necessarily on great albums. The best album of the year could have been a new Nuggets-like compilation if there had been one. As it was, there wasn’t any one album that clearly towered over all the rest. A lot got played and the following was what got played a lot: 1. THE WHITE STRIPES- Elephant: Lets just…

Knuckel Drager- S/T (?): I purchased this cd used for $5. The best $51 have ever spent I don’t think there is a disc that has come out in the past 5-10 years that sums up my “sound” better than this. A combination of early Man or Astroman? and the Bomboras. The absolute BEST b-movie samples ever mixed to music. It doesn’t hurt that they sample one of my favorite Munsters episodes (Hot Rod Herman). Strictly instrumental, the farfisa rules but the surf guitar riffs are unreal. No label info on the cd, just a local band from Madison, Wisconson….

Liz Phair – Liz Phair Who could ask for more? A pop-friendly record that really pissed people off. This former Indie goddess sounds AM mainstream and her former constituency claims she sold out. Well, Ms. Phair’s new producers and writing team do pull out all of the stops, but it’s hardly a sell-out with titles like “Hot, White Cum”, and intelligent, witty lyrics about her winter-spring romance. The songs are also catchy, lighter-than-air, and sound great on a car radio on that hot summer day. Fire – Electric Six 6Twenty – D-4 Bazooka – Star Spangles Little Killers – Little…

1. The New Pornographers – Electric Version (Matador) In my book, 2000’s “Mass Romantic” was a force to be reckoned with. Hooky song followed by an even hookier song and Heavens to Betsey, followed by an even catchier song! I would have been happy with a follow-up half as good. “Electric Version” delivers with a wallop on the par of an 18-wheeler rolling over a dozen eggs. My only hope for album 3 is for part-time pornographer Dan Bejar to get more than 3 songs on the record. 2. The Wrens – The Meadowlands (Absolutely Kosher) Magnet Magazine published back…

Favorite Things ~ AlBums Zoar ~ Clouds Without Water. The crowning achievement of this group’s young career. On their third album, Zoar is joined by such guests as Matt Johnson (The The), Brendan Perry (Dead Can Dance) and the Masai People of Lake Natron, Tanzania. Weighty issues are tackled here: the unobtainability of happiness through material pursuit, the horror of human disconnect, the finite nature of humanity. Because of the sheer variety of styles represented here, the album demands the listener’s attention, refusing to be played as background music. Reminiscent at times of Nicole Blackman, Elijah’s Mantle, and the Heavenly…

Poop oh ate Tell Tale Signs, Randy, Ani, Ray Davies, and the Cooder anthology was pretty much it for me this slow, tense, political year. Yeah sure Jakob D, the ever-cute Carrie Rodriguez, Kathleen Edwards, and Lynne Hanson ignited some sparks but what’s the poop behind every other aficionado wetting themselves over the latest Baez, Osborne, and Pretenders? And why didn’t any of the new music that crossed my path either by burn or XM leave any stain on my consciousness? Lucinda was great at the Depression era theater alongside Madison Square but without her Buick 6 is a riffless…

Steinski – Nothing To Fear (Soul Ting Records) I am just a little ashamed to have this on the Pooplist, not because of the music, but because the CD is almost impossible to find. Steinski is one of the great DJ/Selector originators, responsible, along with partner Double D, for the seminal “Lesson 1”, “2” and “3”. “Nothing To Fear” is a CD of the mix he made for the BBC radio show “Solid Steel”. The primacy of the beat is the point here. It’s not just that, it’s also the spoken samples he chooses (including one of my own favourites…

Fu Manchu – California Crossing (mammoth) Rockin’ head-bobin’ groove – if you know FU, then you know the deal, fuzzy, sludgy & tight – these guys are as cool as it gets – who else would wear ski hats in the summer ? a lot of hayzie fuzz.. Jurassic 5 – Power in Numbers (interscope) Continuing the positive vibe – regulating the “quality control” – most definitely yo! – what can be said more than ill fuckin’ samples & dope ass rhymes – killer shit take a hit. Here’s where I found my thrills………… 1.Tonight at Noon: A Love Story by Sue Graham Mingus I love Sue. I love Charles. I love every word in this book! Charles had such an amazing mind and his music was so exciting, as of course was his style and how he led his life. Charles did everything to the maximum, took risks and got emotional all over the place. 2.Snapshots From the Lost Highway (more biography on Hank Williams) by Colin Escott, Kira Florita, Rick Bragg A great collection of photographs and anecdotes that you have not seen or heard before….

1. VARIOUS ARTISTS – The Best Bootlegs In The World Ever. . . Hip-hop artists get their grunge on or, to quote the title of the Nirvana meets Destiny’s Child mashed potato, smells like booty. DJ’s, not as musicians but as magicians, create altogether new songs out of old ones, proving the whole to be considerably greater than the sum of the sometimes ridiculously incongruous parts. The cleverest, most outrageous, funniest, most fun release (or non-release) of the year. Song of the year: Freelance Hellraiser’s “A Stroke Of Genie” (The Strokes go to bed with Christina Aguillera). 2. MARY LEE’S…

What I Listened To In 2002 Well, I am getting jaded. Sick of almost all alt.anything. Can’t stomach most singer songwriters. Went out of my way to listen to other types of stuff – except for some of the old reliables. George Harrison – Brainwashed Comfortable listening at its best. Well, the two best are gone but this one resonates with George’s knowledge of what was to come. Missed. Mary Lee’s Corvette – Blood on the Tracks Live, song-for-song recreation of the original. Much more passionate than the original. Speaking of the original: Bob Dylan – Live 1975 – The…
