John Lefsky – Poop 2018

I can’t hear everything. A lot of old timers on this list, but enough newer bands that make me feel I’m not ready for the aesthetic dirt nap.
I still like noise as much as I adore sad sack bedsit gloom. As usual I’m licking the deadline scrote. Dunno if I’m going to comment on each title; we’ll see.

Buy HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT - NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE HUB SO GET YOUR FUCKIN' HEDGE CUT New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
1. HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT – NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE HUB SO GET YOUR FUCKIN’ HEDGE CUT. I have only a slight idea of what they are on about. You don’t have to get every reference to get every riff.

Buy THE EX - 27 PASSPORTS New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon
2. THE EX – 27 PASSPORTS. Just the basics; no special guests, though their previous excursions with Ethiopian musicians have seeped into their sound. I hope they tour the U.S. again; experiencing the drums of Kat Bornefeld is something I would risk my hearing for.

Buy ILL - WE ARE ILL New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
3. ILL – WE ARE ILL. Debut album from a Manchester band who have been around for a few years. The common comparisons have been The Raincoats, The Slits, The Fall, even a little B-52s. What would we do if we didn’t have older bands as references?

Buy REVEREND BEAT MAN AND THE NEW WAVE-BLUES TRASH New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
4. REVEREND BEAT MAN AND THE NEW WAVE-BLUES TRASH. If the Reverend carried the album on his own his Laibach does garage blues think might wear out it’s tread. Blood shifts are provided by other band members, including the invaluable Nicole Izobel Garcia.

Buy GOAT GIRL - GOAT GIRL New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
5. GOAT GIRL – GOAT GIRL. Another debut album, this time from London. “Creep on a train, I really want to smash your head in…” I love the way Lottie sings “Don’t shed a tear, we all feel shame” while managing to sound jaunty and forlorn at the same time.

Buy THE BREEDERS - ALL NERVE New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
6. THE BREEDERS – ALL NERVE. Not many on the Breeders bandwagon, based on the online lists I’ve perused. Whatever. I love the way the voices of Deals meld and how the bright sound contradicts the mostly bleak lyrics. There is a lot of running away, bodily fluids, trauma…and, hey, it’s the first American artist I have on the list!!!

Buy DRINKS - HIPPO LITE New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
7. DRINKS – HIPPO LITE. A skeletal wind up toy of an album, straining to stay in tune. Kind of a D.I.Y Canterbury thing. I’d love to hear them cover “O Wot A Dream” by Kevin Ayers.

Buy THE MEKONS 77 - IT IS TWICE BLESSED New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
8. THE MEKONS 77 – IT IS TWICE BLESSED. I haven’t lived with this one for long, but it’s the Mekons!!! If I had more time it might have been higher up. Actually, it’s Mekons 77. Just as pissed/funny/tragic and creaking under the weight of history.

Buy THE BEVIS FROND - WE'RE YOUR FRIENDS, MAN New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
9. THE BEVIS FROND – WE’RE YOUR FRIENDS, MAN. Another double slab, and it’s almost too much. Sometimes the guitar hero gets wearying, but the melodies make up for it. And who am I? Like he sings-“Every asinine reviewer blithly referencing nemesis just float your viewpoint down the sewer.”

Buy LOW - DOUBLE NEGATIVE New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
10. LOW – DOUBLE NEGATIVE. Is this designed to piss off their fans? Sad core melodies fucked by end of the world glitches. Maybe I like it so much because it annoys other people. Or maybe it’s like a beautiful dream, but you live near a hairpin turn and the sound of the latest accident spikes your reverie.

SHANNON SHAW – IN NASHVILLE.
HANTERHIR – THE SAVING OF CADAN.
CARLA BOZULICH – QUIETER.
AMY RIGBY – THE OLD GUYS.
NENEH CHERRY – BROKEN POLITICS.
THE GOON SAX – WE’RE NOT TALKING.
ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES – MIRROR.
MARIANNE FAITHFULL – NEGATIVE CAPABILITY.
J. MASCIS – ELASTIC DAYS.
ALEXANDER TUCKER – DON’T LOOK AWAY.
