Joan Jett & The Blackhearts: Unvarnished (Blackheart Records)
I haven’t followed her career much over the years but I picked this up and was psyched to hear her rocking hard with her classic rock riffs. She’s still got “IT”.

Wau Y Los Arrrgh!!!: Todo Roto (Slovenly)
This band is about as perfect for my taste in music as you can get. Crazed garage rock with wicked keyboard action. The vocals are as manic as ever. Still can’t understand a single thing he’s saying but I know that whatever it is he MEANS IT.

Buy Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine: White People and the Damage Done New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon
Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine: White People and the Damage Done (Alternative Tentacles)
Jello has really stepped up to the plate with this venomous disc. Catchy punk tunes and I love the horn section on the remixed tracks. “Brown Lipstick Parade” says it all.

Buy The Julie Ruin: Run Fast New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon
The Julie Ruin: Run Fast (Dischord)
Definitely more Le Tigre than Bikini Kill with regards to the catchiness factor but she still has some bite. Not as great as either of her previous ventures but I love that she’s back out there sharing her music.

Buy Man or Astroman?: Defcon 5...4...3...2...1 New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon
Man or Astroman?: Defcon 5…4…3…2…1 (Communicating Vessels)
MOAM haven’t sounded this good since Experiment Zero almost 20 years ago. More surf and garage and less experimental. Hoping they continue to put out music and this wasn’t just a one shot deal.

Buy Nightmares for a Week: Civilian War New or Used via Amazon    Buy New or Used via Amazon
Nightmares for a Week: Civilian War (Suburban Home)
This band can do no wrong. They have a groove like no other. NFAW is the band you see live and watch the crowd chant along to every song. Their influences hit so many marks and that’s what makes them such a great band.

COMPILATIONS –

Beat From Badsville (Stag-O-Lee)
WILD double 10″ vinyl with songs that influenced Lux and Ivy and you can see why. Each side hits a different scene/sound. My favorite is the “Angry Babes Getting Even” side (surprised?) which has some amazing rockabilly tunes.

Throttlebilly Beach Riot (CD Baby)
This comp was put together by Surfabilly Freakout Radio in the midwest. It covers surf, garage rock and rockabilly/psychobilly from bands in that area including one of my fav bands Knuckel Drager.

LIVE –

The B-52’s: Indigo O2, London 8/16/13 (Concert Live)
One of their last live shows and it covers their entire career including a song i’ve never seen live in the 30 times i’ve seen them (6060-842). Even after 35 years Kate and Cindy are spot on with their harmonies.

Nirvana: Live and Loud, Seattle 12/13/93 (Geffen)
Again, one of their last shows and it was a doozy. The set list is killer and Kurt’s vocals are amazing. I had this on VHS (taped off MTV) and was psyched to see it get an official release. Scentless Apprentice shows what this band is made of.

REISSUES –

Girl Trouble: Hit it or Quit it (K)
My Buddies from the Northwest finally get their debut (originally on Sub Pop) put out on CD with extra tracks. They may not have invented garage rock but they sure as hell perfected it.

Breeders: LSXX (4AD)
Three discs of Breeders heaven. Remastered original disc plus the complete Live in Stockholm show which was only put out as a fan club only release with just a few songs from the show. The package also includes demos and other unreleased goodies.

SHOWS –

Man or Astroman? @ Mercury Lounge:
The show that restored my faith in live music.

Vaudevillians @ Laurie Beecham Theatre
Not an actual concert but an amazingly fun show with hilarious vaudeville versions of pop culture songs. So great, I went twice.

MOVIES –

The Punk Singer

The documentary about Kathleen Hanna and how her career has evolved.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer
A documentary about the Feminist Punk Rock group in Russia. It goes in to what they stand for and what three of the members went through in the Russian court system. True inspirations.
