Ryan Adams – Prisoner
Glorious, heart on sleeve Rock n Roll.

All Them Witches – Sleeping Through The War
Swampy, grand ROCK. Discovered this Nashville band this year and this album floored me and set the bar high early in the year.

Brand New – Science Fiction
Yet another discovery having never heard any of their previous albums. Dark and challenging concept album but worth the effort.

The Horrors – V
Exciting, catchy, quirky, dense, challenging, moving and so rewarding. These albums felt the most 2017 of all on my list. PS. Play it loud!

Hurray For The Riff Raff – The Navigator
Another discovery for me in 2017. Concept album that found additional relevance given the state of affairs in the world.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – The Nashville Sound
Back with the 400 Unit and sounding better than ever.

LCD Soundsystem – American Dream
Did not expect this to be as amazing as it is and although it is very derivative of 80’s Heads and Bowie it transcends those influences and is solidly in 2017.

The National – Sleep Well Beast
National treasures.

Slowdive – Slowdive
They’re back! Favorite ‘lose myself in curtains of sound’ album.

St. Vincent – MASSEDUCATION
From funk to pop to ballad; diverse fails to adequately describe.

Paul Weller – A Kind Revolution
How does he do it?
ELEVEN HONORABLE MENTIONS
Julien Baker – Turn Out The Lights
Cloud Nothings – Life Without Sound
Depeche Mode – Spirit
Elbow – Little Fictions
Kelly Lee Owens – Kelly Lee Owens
Loyle Carner – Yesterday’s Gone
Ray Davies – Americana
Roger Waters – Is This the Life We Really Want?
Spoon – Hot Thoughts
Unkle – The Road Pt II
Waxahatchee – Out In The Storm
MEANWHILE…
Overflow of goodness that didn’t make the cut… Cigarettes After Sex, Mura Masa, Mount Kimbie, Peter Perret, Protomartyr
Too much pain to listen to… Mount Eeire.
SZA, Kendrick Lamar & Lorde – While I appreciate, haven’t had sufficient time listening.
DISAPPOINTING
Arcade Fire – Sure Creature Comfort is amazing and I even enjoyed Everything Now but Chemistry, Signs of Life, Infinite Content x2… + the whole packaging and theme are tired.
Haim – Thin, gruel that unfortunately sounded quite… samey.
Grandaddy – A few excellent tracks but inconsistent and not worthy of the wait.
War on Drugs – I don’t understand the praise for what sounds like the same basic album as his last one. Yes, I’ll keep trying to ‘get it.’
Father John Misty – Someone needed to be brave and intervene in this excess as there are some gems on this album but good lord, Leaving LA’s 13mins of self indulgent dreck is beyond forgiving.
Public Enemy – Nothing Is Quick In The Desert
Embarrassing cash grab – Prophets Of Rage
