Michael Hodgkiss Poop 08

Due to numerous computer malfunctions, etc. , I have finally had the opportunity to put this whole thing together. Unfortunately, during the computer crash I lost about 5000 songs downloaded this past year. With that was my playlists and various ways to remember what I listened to in 08. So without my CLIFF NOTES , as best I remember it, here goes…

Bob Dylan – TELL TALE SIGNS
This double CD set traveled with me during my trip south a few months ago. Played almost exclusively on the 900 mile trek, this collection proved to be a gem. As with some artists, one never knows which Bob will show up. Happy to see he puts time and effort in to what comes out of the archives.

Neil Young – SUGAR MOUNTAIN 1968
Speaking of archives and never knowing which version of the artist will show up, here comes Neil releasing a live recording which was done just prior to his debut release. Beautiful stuff that Neil and his guitar. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Neil at Madison Square Garden with his electric band (Not Crazy Horse). Always one to chose a great opening act, this year was no exception…Wilco performed.

So far my two are previously recorded but released this year. The next one is a twist…

Glen Campbell – MEET GLEN CAMPBELL
Here’s a well established artist in his own rite, one who recorded million sellers, had his own television show, and was a premier studio musician prior to it all. After falling on tougher times and practically hidden from sight, here comes Glen recording songs from the Velvet Underground, The Replacements, etc…Whew, he singing is there man, and his guitar playing is off the charts. This cat is a true original.

MyCoy Tyner – GUITARS
Having seen him the week of this release it was interesting to see him WITHOUT a guitarist. However, while listening to the album one only wonders why he didn’t ever play with a guitarist before. Derek Trucks is killer on this and his new release is one of my best for next year.

My Morning Jacket – EVIL URGES
These guys have like a billion records with all their downloads from live shows, yet it is only recently (this collection) that I finally get it.

Drive By Truckers – BRIGHTER THAN CREATION’S DARK
The Drive bys, The Gourds(new collection next month) OLDS 97, etc , are all finding a way into the
standard rotation on my iPod. The Truckersw are too cool.

Ryan Adams and The Cardinals – CARDINOLOGY
Sorry to see Ryan end his participation with this band, unless of course he reunites WHISKEYTOWN.

Buy New or Used via Amazon
Randy Newman – HARPS AND ANGELS
I listen and I laugh. Thank goodness for Randy. All musicians should seek his level of cynicism. Now, let’s go have a drink..

The Raconteurs – CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY
Saw these guys open for Dylan a few years ago. Jack is an entertainer and this collection is just that, entertaining.
