Jim Meyers Poop 2018

A few thoughts, if I may. I’m an antiquated analogue relic. All the titles on my list I own on vinyl. I adore the tactile aspect of objects. That being said I am more than willing to embrace the new “digital” delivery of the PooP. One can bring one’s phone into the loo after all, right?

The future is clearly female. Or at least this year was. The majority of the artists I binged on this year were female lead. Not sure what, if anything this means, but I found it interesting.

1. Weakened Friends – Common Blah
This record is so good that I’m literally afraid of it. I know that each time I play it I’m doomed to days of earworms that haunt my sleeplessness and any silent moment I’m increasingly unlikely to be lucky enough to have. Sonia is a ferocious front woman who plays guitar like J Mascis and sings like a banshee. Not Siouxsie, an actual banshee. Annie is an astonishingly intuitive bass player and vocalist who also produces and engineers. Cam, the guy, is a massive drummer and has donated his landscaping van to the band. My new favorite.

2. Courtney Barnett- Tell Me How You Really Feel
My favorite songwriter at the peak of her game. “Nameless, Faceless” is the anthem I wish we didn’t need and yet it’s the most powerful protest song I’ve heard in years. “I hold my keys between my fingers”.

Clarion calls for the environment, animals, and our souls. What a voice, as a singer, witness, writer, and warning.

6. The Beths – Future Me Hates Me

Guitar based genius indie rock. I’m clearly having a mid life crisis. Sounds like Rhino Records circa 1999. Liz Phair & Sebadoh. Fuck I’m old.

7. Joe Strummer – 101
Previously hard to find or unreleased tracks by Saint Joe Strummer. And Johnny Cash!

8. Young Fathers – Cocoa Sugar
Just another bit of multi-racial Scottish neo-funk gospel, soul, astro amazingness. Holy shit this is good.
