    I listened to this record more than any other this past year. Like a mash-up of Stereolab and My Bloody Valentine, Free Energy thumps, buzzes, and floats through 12 wonderfully crafted songs and, at 40 total minutes, doesn’t overstay its welcome.   1. Horsegirl | Phonics On and On | Indie Pop.
    Horsegirl’s combination of melancholic vocals, bouncy tempos, and syncopated guitar riffs shouldn’t work and yet it does. The overall effect feels like something modern and also a throwback to bands like The Velvet Underground & Nico. Check out: Where’d You Go, 2468, Switch Over.

  1. Carseat Headrest | The Scholars | Indie Rock.
    A rock opera in 2025? Carseat Headrest frontman and beautiful weirdo Will Toledo has always been inspired by classic rock icons Pete Townsend and Ray Davies and he goes the whole Tommy / Quadrophenia / Village Green Preservation Society route here. The result is CSHR’s best batch of new songs since 2016’s Teens of Denial. Check out: Devereaux, The Catastrophe.

    Ferrell really outdid herself with this sprawling genre-jumping cornucopia of a record. Reference points include 70’s Outlaw Country, Appalachian Folk, Bluegrass, Gypsy Jazz, Hawaiian Pop, and more. Check out: Dollar Bill Bar, American Dreaming, I Could Drive You Crazy.

  1. Dove Ellis | Blizzard | Singer Songwriter.
    This December 2025 release by Irish folk artist Dove Ellis is a revelation. Comparisons to Jeff Buckley and Van Morrison abound with this self-produced debut LP. Check out: Little Left Hope, Love Is, Heaven Has No Wings.

    Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis fame gives us a shoegaze album that leaves the guitars in the background. It’s a chill mostly instrumental affair with occasional vocals by Bell and a guest or two. Check out: Apple Green UFO, Panic Attack.

    This collaboration of Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Allison Crutchfield, and MJ Lenderman comprises another impressive, well-written group of songs – these folks seem to make great music effortlessly. Check out: Cherry Hard Candy, Healthcliff, Coast.

    Deep Sea Diver is a Seattle-based quartet led by Jessica Dobson who’s played guitar for Beck and The Shins and has an amazing voice comparable to Sharon Von Etten. Feels like a band on the rise. Check out: What Do We Know, Billboard Heart, Emergency.

    I mean, is there are song we needed more in 2025 than “Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down”? A barn burner of a record that’s very Dolly Parton influenced in the best way possible. Check out: Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down, Losing Streak, Red-Eye Flight.

    We saw another great NOL show at Brooklyn’s Warsaw before they embarked on their biggest tour to date. 80’s synth pop reminiscent of Yaz, Depeche Mode, and New Order. Check out: Inept Apollo, In Your Head.

  1. JD McPherson | Nite Owls | Guitar Rock.
    JD McPherson, creator of my favorite Christmas record of the last 20 years (2018’s Socks), and composer/scorer for the fun and fast-paced The Lowdown (with a never-better Ethan Hawke), also released a nice album of original music at the end of 2024. The album expands his repertoire but also includes his trademark rockabilly and surf guitar talents. Check out: Sunshine Getaway, The Phantom Lover of New Rochelle.
