PoOPlists 2013

Main Poop Analysis 2013

Dear POOPster: I know you’ve been waiting with bad breath for the front-page POOP analysis and tabulation. So on this occasion, the 27th annual foray into the realm of the POmpous and the OPinionated, I present to you the combined musings of pretty much the same gaggle of blowhards, 28 of them to be exact. For reasons that both escape and annoy me, we are once again an almost entirely male sampling of swillmeisters; it’s getting right testosterony up in here. Talk about fitting the record geek profile. . . Anyway, to the Price-Waterhouse stuff. As usual, I’ve attempted to…

Wow, I really cut it down to the wire this year. Tons of great music, but the thought of actually sitting down and typing it all up seems daunting. Some of my favorites put out solid new releases and there were plenty of new artists to hold my attention for years to come.    Buy New or Used via Amazon 1. Mayer Hawthorne – Where Does This Door Go I feel like a bit of a sellout putting this at the top of my list this year. But if I am to be honest, it was my most played release.    Buy…

Jim Finnigan Poop 2013

Sonically a great year for live gigs, but not so for new music recordings, if you ask me. And the greatest of all gigs was the two week performance by the 17-year cicadas. Talk about the latest buzz. Looking forward to the return gig in 2030. So, you may ask, if I wasn’t that excited about that many new releases this year, why do I POOP? Because I can POOP old stuff – reissues, archive recordings and so forth. After all, if the Grammy academy can give their biggest awards to collaboration between Chic and The Residents a/k/a Daft Punk,…

Jim Meyers Poop 2013

1. Nightmares For A Week — Civilian War Local heroes deliver their best yet, bringing a nuance and rootsy depth to their usual winning sing/shout along choruses and melodic muscle. “Bloodshot Monday” is by far the song I played the most this year. 2. Superchunk — I Hate Music I grew up with these guys from a “slack mother fucker” to my forties, where my couch looks as good on a Saturday night as the local used to, both a beacon. Whatever, they still sound terrific and “Me and You and Jackie Mitoo” is an all time great song. 3….

2013 was so full of shit! Here’s what’s been prairie doggin’: ALBUMS    Buy New or Used via Amazon 1. Autre Ne Veut – Anxiety Autre Ne Veut translates in English to “I want no other” and this album made me forget about anything else I had heard in 2013 for a good month. It only takes one listen to become enamoured by Ashin’s emotional masterpiece.    Buy Newor Used via Amazon 2 . Haim – Days Are Gone Gotta love the “bass face”. These sisters write some catchy pop songs. Hits, people, hits. Danielle’s stuttery, hiccupy vocals remind me of Michael…

Mark Rosen Poop 2013

My Third POOP DISC-CLAIMER (disc-lamer?): All through the year, I was convinced there were some really strong records and easy POOP choices for 2013. Only when I actually compiled my list did I realize that 11 out of my Top 20 picks were in some way direct throwbacks to music originally produced many years ago. More and more I find the output of the young whippersnapper artists increasingly eclipsed by artists or music, uh, of a certain age. I’m growing ever closer to throwing down a “Hey, you kids, get off my lawn.”    Buy Newor Used via Amazon 1 –…

Buy New Or Used via Amazon 1. DROPKICK MURPHYS- Signed and Sealed in Blood: As much as it pains me to admit it, this was Boston’s year in more ways than one and that includes Fenway’s house band. Their most consistent work to date.    Buy New or Used via Amazon 2. DAVID BOWIE- The Next Day: The soundtrack to my first half of the year. The “not quite dying” theme of the title track had particular resonance for what was going on at the time.    Buy New or Used via Amazon; 3. JASON ISBELL- Southeastern: The best songwriter and storyteller…

I skipped 2012 for no good reason but I’m back for 2013. Moving to an all subscription based music collection has resulted in a ton of music to listen to, probably too much in actuality but here we go with a list of those albums that I listened to most repeatedly over the last year. I’m going to keep my descriptions short because really music is a personal thing and one’s liking or disliking of something is based on their experience, and really is there anything more disappointing than to recommend something to someone saying how listening to it was…

John Lefsky Poop 2013

Like almost every other year there is so much good music I don’t have the time, or cash, to get it all. Most of my old favorites didn’t let me down. Most of the new favorites sound like old favorites. How many are going to break barriers and change music? I’m guessing none. I’m just glad that I still like it loud. My biggest musical disappointment was the closing of my favorite music venue, Maxwell’s. 95% of the time I became a fan of the opening act. They knew how to put a bill together. Luckily I was able to…

“I hate music. What is it worth? Can’t bring anyone back to this earth. But fill in the space between all the notes,And I’ve got nothing else so I guess here we go.” – “Me and You and Jackie Mittoo,” Superchunk This list goes to eleven:    Buy New or Used via Amazon Jason Isbell – Southeastern. Just a perfect alt country album.    Buy New or Used via Amazon Kurt Vile – Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze. Love him and he’s just getting better and better.    Buy New or Used via Amazon Steve Earle – The Low Highway. One of his very best….

Irv Rosen Poop 2013

What I listened to in 2013 So little music, so much time. Listening less. And less. As part of my slide to senility, not much new seems to speak to me at all. So this list is mostly new efforts by older artists. I guess this is the way it is meant to be. Why is it that invariably (or almost so), the current releases of “legacy” artists while good, rarely seem to approach the quality (or my perception of the quality) of their older works? Is it perception or is it real?    Buy New or Used via Amazon Richard…

John Stewart Poop 2013

To be quite (honest) with you I am really losing it as far what is current. Maybe I just don’t give a crap anymore. It’s not that I don’t hate new music. I mean if I hear something I really like? I will stand up and take notice of it. I have been accused of many things such as being a rockist. But then again would a rockist name an album and single of the year by a French Technopop duo named Daft Punk? Really loved that album and the single “Get Lucky” was amazing. But I think the term…

Top Ten    Buy New or Used via Amazon 1. Burial – Rival Dealer (Hyperdub) Burial made his anti-bullying, transgender-empathetic message clear in his text to the BBC and in this EP’s spoken word coda, but on Rival Dealer the theme of identity flux is also a deep-seeded musical element. “Do you know who I am?” wonders one sample; “You know my fuckin’ style!” taunts another (Raekwon, I believe). We sure thought we knew, but on “Hiders” and “Come Down to Us”, Burial shows us a new side, one so bright and so warm, an unexpected gift.    Buy New or Used…
