3. PADDY & THE RATS – From Wasteland To Wonderland: A Celtic rock band that has absolutely cornered the party like a pirate market in their native Budapest. Their songs are anthems that match their ambition.

Buy ANGELINE MORRISON - The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience New or Used via Amazon
Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
4. ANGELINE MORRISON – The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience: Fascinating story of a young British born black woman who went looking for the musical heritage of black people in Britain expecting to find a rich body of work similar to what developed in the Americas. Instead she found nothing. So she researched the lives of black people living in Britain and using the folk idiom wrote her own songs. Eliza Carthy’s participation and producer and performer ensures that it sounds authentic.

6. DRIVE-BY-TRUCKERS – Welcome 2 Club XIII: Stepping back from the contemporary commentary and politics of the last couple of anthems, the band revisits the South and reminds us that it has a couple of the best storytellers in music.

Buy OYSTERBAND - Read The Sky New or Used via Amazon

7. OYSTERBAND – Read The Sky: Easily the most consistent of the old English folk rock bands return with their album in 8 years.

8. PHOENIX – Alpha Zulu: After a couple of uninspired albums, the band rediscovers it’s musical mojo.

Buy DRY CLEANING - Stumpwork New or Used via Amazon
Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
9. DRY CLEANING – Stumpwork: Florence Shaw’s psychedelic ramblings are aptly supported by what sounds like a vey tight band.

Buy HARDWICKE CIRCUS - The Borderlands New or Used via Amazon
Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?]
10. HARDWICKE CIRCUS – The Borderlands: Certain areas of the UK produce very distinctive types of music. This band is from the border area between northern England and Scotland and are rooted in the rock music from the area.

11. THE DIRTY KNOBS – External Combustion: The success of the band should not be surprising. Campbell was an already established songwriter and he had 50 years experience as a Heartbreaker.
12. TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND – I Am The Moon: I. Crescent II. Ascension III. The Fall IV. Farewell: I’ll be the first to admit that I did not follow the story behind this series. What I did enjoy was several hours of original music from the band.
13. DROPKICK MURPHYS – This Machine Still Kills Fascists: In the 25 years that the Guthrie estate has been partnering with various artists to give voice to Guthrie’s lyrics, some pretty terrific music has come out of it. The Dropkick Murphys have always had an affinity for the characters that you find in Guthrie’s lyrics. They get credit for taking an acoustic approach to the songs rather than trying to clone “Shipping Off To Boston”.
14. TAJ MAHAL & RY COODER – Get On Board: Very relaxed and enjoyable reunion album for Mahal and Cooder 57 years after their time together in the Rising Sons.
15. FONTAINES D.C. – Skinty Fia: As much as I loved their debut, I thought their second album was one of the most poorly recorded albums I had ever heard. The new album corrects those problems and shows a maturing band.
16. LUCINDA WILLIAMS – You Are Cordially Invited … A Tribute To The Rolling Stones: Volume 6 of Lucinda’s Lockdown series of tribute albums. I’m astonished how well this works. Her voice is well suited to the Stone’s songs, especially the more country influenced ones.
17. ROLLING BLACKOUTS C.F. – Endless Rooms: Three albums in. Each one sounds different but they are all very melodic and memorable.
18. ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS – The Boy Named If: The first EC album in a very long time with any staying power in my psyche.
19. MARTIN COURTNEY – Magic Sign: Jangle pop that is not that much of a departure from his day job with Real Estate however that’s not a bad thing.
20. LEE BAINES & THE GLORY FIRES – Old Time Folks: Traveling some of the same back roads as the Drive By Truckers, the songs are just as personal although Baines has kept more of an edge.
21. THE HANGING STARS – Hollow Heart: British psychedelic band taking a very hard turn towards country rock & Gram Parsons.
22. LE VENT DU NORD – 20 Printemps: There’s just something about Quebecois folk music that I love listening to, especially in the winter. I’m still learning about it but this is one of the most exciting groups.
23. THE BLACK KEYS – Dropout Boogie.
24. HOODOO GURUS – Chariot Of The Gods: Still kicking with their first album in over a decade.
25. MAMA’S BROKE – Narrow Line: Folk duo from Halifax. “Windows” was one of the more haunting songs from last year.

REISSUES & OLDER STUFF
1. THE BEATLES – Revolver: Not as revelatory as some of the earlier box sets but still a fascinating glimpse into one of their best albums.
2. SOUNDTRACK – Summer of Soul: By 1969, I was in high school, had discovered the Fillmore East and was comfortable going all over NYC and yet knew nothing about this series of free concerts in the city.
3. DAVID BOWIE – Toy Box: Bowie’s reworking of earlier material and obscurities.
4. FRANK ZAPPA – Zappa ’75 – Zagreb/Ljubljana: Maybe it was the language barrier, but this document of Zappa’s only tour of Yugoslavia got the comedy material out of the way early followed by a showcase for one of the tighter bands Zappa ever put together.
5. NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE – Toast.
