Eric Fine Poop 2013

Wow, I really cut it down to the wire this year. Tons of great music, but the thought of actually sitting down and typing it all up seems daunting. Some of my favorites put out solid new releases and there were plenty of new artists to hold my attention for years to come.

1. Mayer Hawthorne – Where Does This Door Go
I feel like a bit of a sellout putting this at the top of my list this year. But if I am to be honest, it was my most played release.

2. Jonathan Wilson – Fanfare
Can you hear the breeze off the ocean? It is definitely in the air. Moodier than his past efforts, still satisfying.

3. Jason Isbell – Southeastern
Never a huge Drive by Truckers fan, this emotional singer-songwriter is a sober, sparse, introspective gem.

Buy Richard Thompson – Electric New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
4. Richard Thompson – Electric
That signature sound is as strong as ever.

5. Josh Rouse – The Happiness Waltz
A return to form. Reminds me of a fall day relaxing on the porch.

Buy Jim James - Regions of Light and Sound of God New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or used via Amazon
6. Jim James – Regions of Light and Sound of God
What a pleasant surprise to have enjoyed this record as much as I did. It has it all – beats, loud guitars, and car sing-alongs.

7. Yo La Tengo – Fade
Some things just never get old. It’s not often we get to hear new music that feels like it has been with us for decades.

8. Superchunk – I Hate Music
I don’t believe them for a second. Such a great return to the tops of my indie-rock charts. Power hooks all the way.

9. Best Coast – Fade Away (EP)
Sometimes more of the same is a good thing.

10. The Flaming Lips – The Terror
Melodic noise best describes this release. More coherent then the previous few.

11. Lorde – Pure Heroine Grammy darling notwithstanding, she gives new meaning to teenage angst.
12. Laura Marling – Once I Was an Eagle A new face of folk music, this young one has an old soul.
13. Neko Case – The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You The most powerful voice in music adds another strong release to her catalog.
14. Junip – Junip This dark, second release from Jose Gonzalez grows on you with each listen. Great production work throughout.
15. Kurt Vile – Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze Long songs that still kept my attention from beginning to end. Great guitar work as well.
16. Washed Out – Paracosm Relaxed and dreamlike, the sophomore release picks up where the first left off.
17. Lucius – Wildewoman The new definition of Americana.
18. San Fermin – San Fermin Really strong debut of complex, layered songs reminiscent of Grizzly Bear.
19. Steve Gunn – Time Off Partially improvised, it is 9 songs clocking in at 40 minutes featuring excellent guitar play.
20. Elvis Costello & The Roots – Wise Up Ghost and Other Songs A strange collaboration on paper works perfectly.

Top Live, Reissues, Box Sets and a bucket of other:

1. Elvis Presley – Elvis at Stax A bit dated and goofy, there is still some great examples of Elvis’ desire to groove at the end of his life
2. Calexico – Spiritoso A record store day exclusive highlighting the drama in their songs from a deep catalog
3. Neil Young – Live at the Cellar Door Bootlegs have been bouncing around for years. Sound quality of this early show is a classic
4. Jellyfish – Radio Jellyfish: Live Radio Broadcasts 1993 Always great to hear new material from these power-pop heroes, even the covers
5. The Band – Live at the Academy of Music 1971 What an unbelievable collection from The Band in peak form
6. The Postal Service – Give Up (Deluxe Reissue) I really loved this record first time around and it still hold up
7. The Clash – Sound System Nothing I don’t already have, but beautiful packaging and great liner notes
8. Bob Dylan – Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 Pleasant surprise from this era
9. The Allman Brothers Band – Brothers and Sisters (Super Deluxe Edition) Classic reboot with some great live and unreleased material
10. William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics Vol. 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? Nigerian musician with hypnotic grooves

And there you have it; I can now close the book on 2013 and look forward to 2014’s journey. Thanks to all that had the patience to read all the way and the patience of my wife and son for putting up with me, again.
