Mike Miller Poop 01

2001…I have purchased more music during this year than in any other single year that I can recall. Unfortunately for POOP purposes, very little of it was new music. I’d be hard pressed to come up with 10 top picks of 2001 based upon the new releases of this year. It’s not as though I’m jaded. I’m very enthusiastic about the music I found in 2001. So for my purposes and as if anyone really cares, I’m disregarding the original release date of my picks and listing those things that I have truly dug. Obviously dominated by 60s-70s Italian soundtracks. Thanks to Dusty Groove America (web site) & Home of the Hits (Bflo,NY) & Record Archive (Rochester,NY) & eBay too. I feel the need to mention these outlets for without them life here in the abyss of WNY would be unbearable.

AND…. Records galore. Flea markets, record shops, garage sales & of course, eBay. 60s Bossa Nova, Cal Tjader, Henry Mancini, Charlie Byrd, Oscar Peterson, Ramsey Lewis, Vince Guaraldi, Bill Evans, Burt Bacharach, Paul Desmond, Sergio Mendes, Galt McDermot, Duke Ellington, Ben Webster, Herbie Mann, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gabor Szabo, Laurindo Almeida, Roy Budd, just about any lp with Carol Kaye on it & countless other hipsters whose music falls into the cracks between jazz, blues, pop, easy, etc.

Folks who made deeply personal music that was meant to be shared and enjoyed. Music that fits into the background as well as reveals true beauty under closer examination. Mood music with substance! Music that, for me serves as an antidote to the hubris of rock ‘n roll & our vapid culture in general. How’s that for POOPness?
