Mark Zip Poop 2013

Albums     Buy New or Used via Amazon Disclosure – “Settle” – I was pleasantly surprised that this showed up quite high in a number of other US-based year -end lists. It’s a really good contemporary pop LP, made from a UK perspective. The beats are varied and interesting, house, two-step, garage- funky and, I’m sure, some other micro-genres with names I’m hip enough to know. They also manage to integrate many different guest vocalists remarkably seamlessly. Unlike the Major Lazer record (see below), Disclosure make a real effort to integrate guests into and overall sound and feeling. This one…

Matt Nerney Poop 2013

2013 was a year of big changes for my family and while music still played an important role in my experience, it just didn’t integrate itself as it usually has in the past. Moving to Vermont, finding new jobs, and shaping a new way of life has been a massive shift, an incredible life change that has included more wood-stacking, snow-blowing, and thankfully, more craft beer drinking. The experience has been intensely hectic and harried, but overall, happy. Music seemed almost to be an afterthought. The holidays though, as usual, brought many year-end reflections, and of course, the POOP. Tops…

Paul Cangelosi Poop 2013

(in no particular order)     Buy New or Used via Amazon Joan Jett & The Blackhearts: Unvarnished (Blackheart Records) I haven’t followed her career much over the years but I picked this up and was psyched to hear her rocking hard with her classic rock riffs. She’s still got “IT”.     Buy New or Used via Amazon Wau Y Los Arrrgh!!!: Todo Roto (Slovenly) This band is about as perfect for my taste in music as you can get. Crazed garage rock with wicked keyboard action. The vocals are as manic as ever. Still can’t understand a single thing he’s…

The Full Story Behind the ‘Chinese Democracy’ Leak (Or: How the FBI & RIAA spent millions pursuing a guy for promoting a record for them)

The Full Story Behind the ‘Chinese Democracy’ Leak (via Antiquiet). A good long read about how the FBI and the RIAA spent millions and millions dollars pursuing the guy who leaked parts of Chinese Democracy. By the actual, real, leaker. (Who had the track up for less than an hour, and didn’t allow downloads) Dog, meet tail… Now get ready to be wagged.

Andrew Martin PoOP 2013

Poop – Andrew W. Martin, Eddyville, NY Records and sounds that came to me in this year but were not necessarily released in this year… As the lone pooper representing sounds primarily directed at the dance floor and a non- listener of rock since the Pixies Doolittle (unless LCD Soundsystem counts as rock) … here are some interesting things I felt this year…      Buy New or Used via Amazon 1. Special Request – Soul Music – Houndstooth – 2013 – A man comfortable in all genres makes a stellar album deeply wed to old school UK hardcore. Paul…

BEST: 2013 “Time for the comedown.”    Buy New or Used via Amazon 1. Kurt Vile / Wakin On a Pretty Daze: A mobius strip of psychedelia blooms up, up and away from this newly-minted guitar icon, who unfurls eighty minutes of magic here, and makes it seem effortless. Wonderful.    Buy New or Used via Amazon 2. Mikal Cronin / MCII: Former sidekick kicks down the mike stand, making your eyes widen and your heart pump love. Call for PoOP!

Our fearles leader writes: ———– To the POmpous and OPinionated: ‘Tis the season to write POOPlists Fa-la-la-la-la. . . . It’s that time of the year. A refresher about the rules and deadlines: Limit yourself to what would be 2 sides of 8×11 paper. Leave a slight margin so your swill does not get lost in the binding of the hard copy. Any layout format that works for you works. Copy sent as a WORD DOC works best for me. NEW RULE: Despite my past pleas, last year set a record for $$ lost putting this together. Even though I…

A (very) quick video explanation of how your ability to sell stuff you purchased legally is threatened

You walk into a record store and buy the new UK import CD of 2NE1’s new record 2nd, (because you are in the mood for some k-Pop and glitter). You listen to it a few times and move on. You have a yard sale and put out a few CDs for sale. A kid buys it from you. You’ve got a bit of money you can use to buy more CDs. The kid gets started on a whole new trajectory of glitter-pop and hipness Sounds like a pretty normal day-to-day transaction, no? Well, yes, but it relies upon a legal…

Yes, we do feel somewhat vindicated…

The Harlem Shake phenomenon has us feeling somewhat vindicated. But we should not feel too clever. I was chatting with a a couple of the neighbourhood kids last Monday and quizzed them about the number one track in the country. These two are usually singing Carly Rae Jepsen and every other Top 40 radio hit. They had no idea what I was talking about. This was even after I reminded them that they had laughed at me when I played the track for them during the summer. I did my stupid superior dance internally and moved on. I did, however,…

How the 808 drum machine got its cymbal, and other tales from music’s geeky underbelly

Trent Woble at TheVerge has a fascinating story from the NAMM convention on Don Lewis, a pioneer of electronic instruments and a consultant to Roland. The feature then goes on to highlight a few of the out of the way innovations on display at the convention. Look at all those knobs! See all those dials! http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/30/3932574/how-the-808-found-its-cymbal-musical-tales-namm-geeky-underbelly

This is the space where I usually vent about the year just passed. Guns are bad, liberals are good, blah, blah, blah. ________________________________________ • This Will End In Tears: The Miserabilist Guide To Music | Adam Brent Houghtaling Yup, a book tops my list for the first time ever. My wife always complains that I listen to too much of what she calls “sad bastard music” and that was before I was armed with “the definitive guide to the sad songs that make us so happy.” I spent most of the year with this collection by my side as I…

Main Poop Analysis 2012

With a quarter of a century behind us, we POmpous and OPinionated types have gone back to the well to haul up the usual buckets of blather and bile. While the world around us rages, we 26 would-be music critics prattle on, sharing our self-important musical observations with one another and exercising our Constitutional right to bear snark . After America got its ass kicked first by Sandy the Storm and then Sandy Hook the Elementary School, sometimes it’s the trivial stuff that keeps us keeping on. Sort of like a National Trifle Association. If you are among the already…

Hip-Hop killed it this year! By the time I’m done compiling this list, most of these albums will be considered completely uncool to listen to. Shit, the same can be said for Indie Rock/ Pop records as well. There wasn’t one album that chewed me up, spit me out and put me back together , making me a better person in the process… The way a life changing album can. That being said, there were butt loads of feel good, feel angry and get faded audible pornography!! #DRANK!! Top 20 Albums
