SHEMEKIA COPELAND – America’s Child: She’s been recording for 20 years now but I really haven’t been following since her first album. I first started hearing bit and pieces of this CD on a Canadian radio station of all places. It hits in all the right places- good band, very political and a great duet with John Prine.

There was a lot of good music last year but no-one album that I could call exceptional or better than the rest. Finding new music and especially new artists, continues to be a problem and is unlikely to improve soon. A loose ranking based on what I’ve been playing: Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile,
Chris Hillman,
Offa Rex
Songhoy Blues,
The War On Drugs,
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit,
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings,
The Rails,
Little Steven,
Lilly Hiatt,

1. WILLIE NILE- World War Wilie – As screwed up as things were last year, this was an escape. It got played often and always made me smile. Willie is as dependable as musicians get these days. While everybody else struggles to put out albums, this is his 5th in 7 years. And ends with a great version of “Sweet Jane.”

Buy New Or Used via Amazon 1. DROPKICK MURPHYS- Signed and Sealed in Blood: As much as it pains me to admit it, this was Boston’s year in more ways than one and that includes Fenway’s house band. Their most consistent work to date.    Buy New or Used via Amazon 2. DAVID BOWIE- The Next Day: The soundtrack to my first half of the year. The “not quite dying” theme of the title track had particular resonance for what was going on at the time.    Buy New or Used via Amazon; 3. JASON ISBELL- Southeastern: The best songwriter and storyteller…

It’s official. It was bound to happen eventually. After I started drawing up my list of best music for what was admittedly a less than an exemplary year, I started looking at who I had picked. It was only then that I realized that my picks were more appropriate for AARP than POOP. There were a lot of old guys on this list, some of whom hadn’t made one of my lists in decades. I mean even the Doughboys who have been recording for only 5 years formed in 1963! There was a lot of good (not great) music to…

Buy New or Used via amazon 1. THE DECEMBERISTS – The King Is Dead – No themes. No prog rock. Just simple literate direct songs by a band that is hitting its peak. Even watching them in concert in a drenching rain did not dampen my enthusiasm for either the band or the album.   Buy New or Used via amazon 2. BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS – Scandalous – We knew from the first disc that this was a top notch funk and r&b band. The new album has a real edge and energy to it- sort of p(f)unk….

Buy New or Used via amazon 1. THE IMAGINED VILLAGE – Empire & Love: The project is premised on the belief that traditional folk music was never intended to be static or relegated to history in the form that a generation finds it. It was meant to be poked, adapted, stretched and reflective of the times and society to be passed on to the future. That apparently includes old Slade songs. I thought that 2008 was probably one of the best years in music over the past decade and judging from a lot of other people’s comments, I was just about the only one who felt that way. I’m not sure what people thought this year, but for me 2009 was a year of great expectations and equally great disappointments although maybe I’m just generalizing from everything else that has been happening. Oh well, here it goes:   Buy New or Used through amazon VARIOUS ARTISTS – The Soul of Spanish Harlem: Superb collection of songs recorded in NYC between 1967…
