Favorite Things ~ AlBums Zoar ~ Clouds Without Water. The crowning achievement of this group’s young career. On their third album, Zoar is joined by such guests as Matt Johnson (The The), Brendan Perry (Dead Can Dance) and the Masai People of Lake Natron, Tanzania. Weighty issues are tackled here: the unobtainability of happiness through material pursuit, the horror of human disconnect, the finite nature of humanity. Because of the sheer variety of styles represented here, the album demands the listener’s attention, refusing to be played as background music. Reminiscent at times of Nicole Blackman, Elijah’s Mantle, and the Heavenly…

These are a few of my favorite things. Albums of 2002 Fingathing: Superhero Music On their second album, Fingathing make hip-hop fun again by adding cello, long drum interludes and an array of vocal samples. Mum: Finally We Are No One Another sophomore release, this from an Icelandic band whose work recalls Bjork’s “Vespertine.” Music boxes, bells, and crisp layered sounds conjure images of snow and ice-covered lakes. Deadly Avenger: Deep Red An assortment of soundtrack flavors, breakbeats and old school funk, co-starring the Budapest Film Orchestra. The album comes with stickers too! Dom and Roland: Back for the Future…

09 was an interesting year. Since this is my second year of POOP I did a better job of noting what I listened to throughout the year and managed to actually get a larger list together this time around. These albums are in no particular order, they are just the 10 that I came back to the most often over the course of the year in general.   Buy through amazon   OR   @ eMusic 1. Illinois: The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe I referenced this album last year, at that time only a few “chapters” were available, finally this…

poop o mine 09 just as I thought the country had turned a great corner, I come to realize it’s more fucked than ever. Now I gotta intelligently (a word obsolete in our manner & discourse) disinter what sucked from what didn’t (a line harder & harder to discern as my eyes and interest flee south). Hell man, I’m not Glenn Beck the great anesthesia stooge. I can’t lead you from the darkness. so I don’t know what the best of the worst was. I’m going on what made an impact. What shielded me and mine from the madness coming…

Best Records:   Buy New or Used via Amazon Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend This album brings me back to days of tapping kegs and watching bands play on the beach at Fairfield University. College pop, in the best way. Love the way that it evokes Paul Simon in songs like Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa and early Police in others like The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance – super songwriting and great beats. Caught them at the Bowery Ballroom earlier in the year and had a blast.   Buy New or Used via Amazon 2. The Virgins – Virgins Though…

Unenthused by the sterile, finished-off hype-pop that has f(l)attened most year end round-ups (Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes,…

Dear POOPster: Yes we can . . . be POmpous and OPinionated. Come hell or high gas prices, a sputtering economy with the fuel light on, and corporate bailouts (where there should have been corporate-types out on bail), 34 POOPsters have still weighed in. Call this your musical stimulus package. For the last twenty-two years, these pages have recognized the creativity, imagination and originality expressed on turntables and in CD players. But it’s quite possible that what America did on November 4th trumped music in terms of creativity, imagination and originality. Life imitates POOP. It’s been a long time comin’…
