Bruce Springsteen – ‘Magic’ – Every single word rings true.

Wilco – ‘Sky Blue Sky’ – My favorite Wilco since ‘Being There’. Nels Cline gets MVP of the year for his amazing guitar work especially on ‘Impossible Germany’.

Levon Helm – ‘Dirt Farmer’ – “ And some stayed on to finish what they started, they never parted,
they’re just built that way”.

Bruce Springsteen with The Sessions Band – ‘Live in Dublin’ – The energy and brilliance of the Seeger Sessions concerts
fully captured. I would love to see him record new original songs with this band.

Amy Winehouse – ‘Back to Black’ – The best R&B music to come out of England since Graham Parker and The Rumor’s ‘ Heat Treatment’. The kid has problems but that does not take away from her great talent.

Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez – ‘Live from the Ruhr Triennale’ – Fantastic live show from Germany 2005 with Bill Frisell and Buddy Miller on guitar. Contains Taylor’s great version of ‘Big River’ and nobody can sing ‘Angel of the Morning’ better then Carrie Rodriguez and Chip Taylor.

Josh Ritter – ‘The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter’ – The pride of Idaho takes another giant leap in the Tower of
Song.

Graham Parker – ‘Don’t Tell Columbus’ – Just when I thought it was over for him he makes his best record
since ‘Mona Lisa’s Sister’.

Neil Young – ‘Live at Massey Hall 1971’ – When he was Canada’s greatest folk singer.

I’m Not There’ Soundtrack – Lousy film, great soundtrack

The Waterboys – ‘Book of Lightning’ – Another fine collection of songs that really came to life when Mike Scott, Richard Naiff and Steve Wickham performed them at The Colony Café this past August.

Joe Henry – ‘Civilians’ – With a tremendous band including Bill Frisell, this is Joe Henry’s strongest record. My favorite cut is called ‘Our Song’ with lyrics about seeing Willie Mays at a Scottsdale Home Depot looking at garage
door springs.

Steve Earle – ‘Washington Square Serenade’ – Steve’s first NYC album and it has it’s moments, what it doesn’t have is that killer cut that breaks your heart or makes you sing out in righteous anger.

Lucinda Williams – ‘West’ – One of those records that are so full of loss that you really can’t listen to it but then in your darkest hours you don’t want to hear anything else.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band – ‘It’s Not Big, It’s Large’ – His first record in 4 years and it couldn’t be more wide open. It’s impossible to pin him down.

Bright Eyes – ‘Cassadaga’ – Good but no where near the home run I was expecting. Four Winds is a great song however.

Dion – ‘Son of Skip James’ – Italian blues

Kendel Carson – ‘Rearview Mirror Tears’ – Terrific debut album by Kendel Carson, with Chip Taylor writing most of the songs and handling the production. With Carrie Rodriguez going solo, Kendel Carson has been performing concerts with Chip Taylor and the great guitar player John Platania. Although no one can replace Rodriguez, Carson is also a great musician and singer. Taylor’s songwriting is great through out.
