Another calendar year disappears, while me, still the guy trying to restore my vinyl collection, the one which I lost a few years back during an hurricane, bought only a minimal amount of new music. With that said, this year I’ll make it simple, with minimal verbiage, I submit the following…

Boygenius: “the record” as the title suggests it is THEE record.I’m sure it will (just about) make every one’s list.

IGGY POP: “Every Loser” This is sorta like a “greatest hits” album without any previously recorded hit material on it but rather each song gives you a look/listen into the “characters”/phases Iggy has played over his entire career. Somewhere it was written this is his 19th lp…but then there are six live albums, a slew of compilations AND we didn’t even touch his STOOGES run. I loved Iggy from the first time I saw the STOOGES/MC-5/DAVID PEEL at The Pavilion September of 1969.This is a gem.

SPARKS: Many years ago a guitarist friend offered me “A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing “ one of the very first SPARKS LPs. It appeared his ulterior motive was for the band to play one of their tunes. I offered him, “Maggot Brain”, so we did neither. For their 26th record The Mael Brothers offer “The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte”, “Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is” … ”Veronica Lake”… HaHaHa…

THE HIVES: “The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons” Eleven long years since their last collection, the boys in black and white come alive, in full living color, again. I have a friend who “hates” (his word) THE HIVES, yet he “loves” (my word) THE STROKES…geez…

YO LA TENGO: “This Stupid World”: “New Wave Hot Dogs” one of YLT’s first releases somehow was saved in the storm that took away most of my collection. The single (7 inch) was not but I remember it had a cover of LOVE “A House Is Not A Motel” on the b-side.This new release is right up there.

ALSO RAN:
BILLY STRINGS: While this amazing musician did not have a full fledged release this year, I spent plenty of cash buying everything he has recorded in the past and so glad I did. Then, he releases a single/video…BILLY STRINGS: “California Sober” w/ WILLIE NELSON. Laugh out loud funny.
KANDACE SPRINGS: No release this year so my turntable recycled her collection. My bride and I are heading to Carnegie Hall to see her in the (KANDACE) spring(s)
THEE SACRED SOULS: still playing an album released last year,”Thee Sacred Souls”
I really tried with 100 gecs and while I love some of it I can’t get through the entire series of songs without needing to take a break.
