Is it me or is it getting harder and harder to get my POOP out? Pun very much intended. I know everything seems much harder these days. One of the benefits of being on the other side of 40, I guess. Nonetheless, I somehow managed to get in it, just under the wire. My soft rock tastes of 2010…

1. Junip – Fields
Can a record be both light and heavy at the same time? Deep and bass heavy with a 70’s pop/rock sensibility. Pop shines though in the lightness and the rock brings the heaviness.

2. Sufjan Stevens – The Age of Adz
The sweetness of a Sufjan Stevens record is still there, with more depth. Plenty of blips and beeps mixed in with lots of big sounds.

3. Neil Young – Le Noise
I will be the first to admit I never expected to see a Neil Young record on my year end list ever again. More is less with this solo endeavor. I can’t remember the last time he filled so much space himself.

4. Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse – Dark Night of the Soul
Quite the aptly named album, this dark journey leans on its all-star cast as a vehicle for conveying the hushed, subdued sounds Mark Lindous just didn’t have in him to put on record himself.

5. Wye Oak – My Neighbor/My Creator
I broke my own rule about only including full length albums in my top ten. Sue me. Can you believe this man/woman duo wrecking crew could create such a lovely sound? I expect big things from them in 2011.

6. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Brutalist Bricks
I have no idea what the name of this record means, but it seems to make sense. Everything Ted Leo does is hard. His nonstop energy consistently shines – each record is better than the last.

7. Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record
Once I heard this album was produced by John McEntire, it made so much more sense. It’s as if Tortoise decided to hire Billy Squire as their lead singer. Stroke!

8. Drive-By Truckers – The Big To-Do
I’ve always had a soft spot for these guys. Jay Farrar – take note: this is where you could have been. And try messing with a song called “The Fourth Night of my Drinking”. They carry the alt-country torch proudly.

9. Belle & Sebastian – Write About Love
Sure it does not sound much different from the last B&S LP, but that’s ok. I know what I am getting with them and I like it.

10. Richard Thompson – Dream Attic
I am happy to announce Richard Thompson is alive and well. Still one of the greatest musicians to ever pick up a guitar, choosing to unveil these new songs live in one take was a smart move.
HONORABLE MENTIONS (otherwise known as “these records might be really good I just have not had the time to really sit with them”):
1. Band of Horses – Infinite Arms This is where I go if I need a new fix of My Morning Jacket.
2. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros Again I broke my rule. This record came out in ‘09 but did not hit my radar until now.
3. Best Coast – Crazy For You Not buying the hype, but not kicking them to the curb either. Its lo-fi sound grows on me.
4. The Poises – Blood/Candy This year’s Evan Dando for me. They have been around forever, but still manage to put out a solid record.
5. Mumford & Sons – Sign No More Lyrically, it is just a bit too smart for me. That’s ok, because they fill my need for bluegrass soul.
6. Titus Andronicus – The Monitor Silly and sophomoric… is that such a bad thing in music?
7. Beach House – Teen Dream It takes awhile to get there, but worth the wait.
8. Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma Astral jazz, electro-funk, and ambient noise makes for the perfect spacey, lounge around the house music.
9. The Tindersticks – Falling Down A Mountain It has an international flavor, sung through a whisper.
10. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Sure, why not? Gotta give the man credit for a deep library of samples.
REISSUES, COMPILATIONS and REISSUES (otherwise known as “the good old days”):
1. Giant Sand – Swerve Pick anyone you want; most were rereleased. I’ll take Swerve
2. Jimi Hendrix – West Coast Seattle Boy Wow, it never ends… and I’m glad for that
3. Bruce Springsteen – The Promise As good as hearing it for the first time
4. Pavement – Quarantine The Past I could not have picked better myself (yes I could)
5. The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street So many great gems. And a few duds
6. Miles Davis – Bitches Brew Experimental but still coherent. Stands the test of time
7. David Bowie – Station-to-Station 6 songs. 6 awesome songs
8. Bob Dylan – The Witmark Demos Will I ever get tired of new Dylan songs? Doubt it
9. Apple Records – Box Set No, I did not buy it, but it looks awesome
10. REM – Fables of the Reconstruction Can’t get there from here…
Ending my list with an REM album makes me want to say… This one goes out to the ones I love! To Andrea and Jaden… my rock and my roll… Thanks for the patience, guidance, and general tolerance. Peace Out!
