I’d be embarrassed to truly show you, if such a thing were at all possible, the extent to which the idea of “Top Ten” organizes how I think about what I enjoy, consume, and love. This is a post-High Fidelity culture junkie thing that I’m sure is common to a lot of us contributing here, and I for one have gotten pretty self-conscious about it. Invariably, when I sit down each year to do this Poop List, there’s an odd push/pull between the sincere eagerness I take in constructing these lists, my awareness of the vanity of this sort of exercise, and the reflex of embarrassment that inevitably comes knocking. The whole thing is pretty weird.

I don’t intend to sound overly pious or navel-gazey about something so totally trivial, and I am not unaware that this sort of contorted hedging betrays its own kind of vanity. (POmpous OPinions are, after all, baked into the brand here.) Anyway, I like to write something for my Poop List every year, and this preamble came more naturally and felt more honest than the customary “one write up for each item” sort of thing. The challenge of being ultra pithy about the stuff that truly moved me in 2017 is not one I can meet, at least not this time around.

I do have a couple of other places where I talk at more length about stuff I watch, new and old, and if for some ungodly reason this interests you, there are links under my signature below.

In the meantime, here are my ten favorite albums and movies from 2017, with the top 3 for each highlighted.

*For what it’s worth, the incredible Twin Peaks: The Return would be my #1 movie of the year if you considered it a movie, which I’m not sure I do. Anyway, listing it as such feels like a shot across the old TV-vs-film bow, which is not my intent, and anyway it might give you the wrong idea. I think 2017 was such a great year at the movies, and I don’t really watch TV, though I’ll always turn on for Lynch.
