Mark Rosen Poop 2023

My POOP DISC-CLAIMER (disc-lamer?): I actually found a good amount of interesting music in 2023 and I didn’t have to pad my list with records that might have only marginally deserved my recognition. But as is the usual case, about half of my picks are rooted, in one way or another, in the past. RetroPOOP, if you will. To mangle the words of Sir Peter of Townshend, I look pretty old but my taste’s backdated, yeah. Buy New or Used via Amazon     Rent via iTunes [?] 1. THE REPLACEMENTS – Tim (2023 re-mix, part of the Tim: Let It Bleed…

Mark Rosen Poop 2016

2016. Where to begin? To paraphuck Charles Dickens, it was the worst of times . . . period. It was a year of unfathomable loss. Yes, the music world lost far too many big names, but that’s not the loss I am referring to. America lost its heart and its compassion, its soul, its purpose, its way. At this point, all I can ask Not-Mein-Fuhrer is to please not break anything too, too badly. Unfortunately I have very little faith in that happening. America has a president with serious and deep-rooted psychological problems who just might find unimaginable ways to…

Dan Wilmer Poop 2016

16 Albums for 2016 Dan Wilmer, Alexandria, VA Egad, what a year. Good music helped…a bit. Buy New or Used via Amazon    Rent via iTunes [?] 1. Car Seat Headrest – Teens of Denial. I like a lot of the other albums on this list, some a whole bunch. This is on a whole different level. “Fill in the Blanks” offers a punky rev-up to get things started, while mod-influenced songs like “Connect the Dots” seem destined to be featured in a future Wes Anderson movie. But the real highlights are tracks like “Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales,” and “Joe…

Jim Meyers Poop 2013

1. Nightmares For A Week — Civilian War Local heroes deliver their best yet, bringing a nuance and rootsy depth to their usual winning sing/shout along choruses and melodic muscle. “Bloodshot Monday” is by far the song I played the most this year. 2. Superchunk — I Hate Music I grew up with these guys from a “slack mother fucker” to my forties, where my couch looks as good on a Saturday night as the local used to, both a beacon. Whatever, they still sound terrific and “Me and You and Jackie Mitoo” is an all time great song. 3….

Mark Rosen Poop 2013

My Third POOP DISC-CLAIMER (disc-lamer?): All through the year, I was convinced there were some really strong records and easy POOP choices for 2013. Only when I actually compiled my list did I realize that 11 out of my Top 20 picks were in some way direct throwbacks to music originally produced many years ago. More and more I find the output of the young whippersnapper artists increasingly eclipsed by artists or music, uh, of a certain age. I’m growing ever closer to throwing down a “Hey, you kids, get off my lawn.”    Buy Newor Used via Amazon 1 –…
