.CARLA BOZULICH – BOY (CONSTELLATION) I had a dream a few nights ago. The world was ending, I was in a plane that was torn in two and heading for a crash. I jumped out, knowing I would catch fire and die screaming. I jumped and started to burn. I woke up on the ground, laughing. I’m not sure what the hell that has to do with this album, except it seems deceptively dark. When it’s over you have a few welts, but what the hell.

.TY SEGALL – MANIPULATOR (DRAG CITY) Fuzz, Glam, Scott Muni’s Things From England…this record wears its influences proudly without sounding backdated. Sing along, tap and stomp your foot and wait five minutes before his next release.

.HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT – URGE FOR OFFAL (PROBE PLUS) As always, I don’t understand most of their references. They don’t care if anyone outside of the U.K. understands the lyrics. As long as the hooks and melodies are there and I get a few of the jokes I’m set. I just wish they would visit the U.S. one day. Maybe a triple bill with the Bevis Frond and Billy Childish, who seldom hit these shores.

.THE LEN PRICE 3 – NOBODY KNOWS (JLM) Might be my most played record of 2014. Clocks in at, about, 33 minutes. It’s hard to write this stuff without clogging it up with references, but the Jam, The Prisoners, Billy Childish and Wreckless Eric all spring to mind. And hey, those high harmonies are Entwistle all the way. This is the band that Townshend should be making records with.

.EX HEX – RIPS (MERGE) This should have come out in the Spring, or early Summer. It’s a top down blast. Always been a fan of Mary Timony, but I don’t remember her guitar playing ever being this (insert hokey but sincere adjective).

And the rest, because I’m antsy and tired.

.SPIDER BAGS – FROZEN LETTER (MERGE)
.REIGNING SOUND – SHATTERED (MERGE) Holy shit, I’m a Merge whore.
.PERE UBU – CARNIVAL OF SOULS (FIRE)
.SWANS – TO BE KIND (YOUNG GOD)
.THEE OH SEES – DROP (CASTLE FACE)
.MUFFS – WHOOP DEE DOO (BURGER)
.WHITE FENCE – FOR THE RECENTLY FOUND INNOCENT (DRAG CITY)
.OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY – DIGITAL AGE (BURGER)
.GOAT – COMMUNE (SUB POP)
.ELECTRIC MESS – HOUSE ON FIRE (SOUND FLAT)
.ROBYN HITCHCOCK – THE MAN UPSTAIRS (YEP ROC)
.ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE – ASTROGASM FROM THE INNER SPACE (IMPREC)
.KING TUFF – BLACK MOON SPELL (SUB POP)
.FRIPP AND ENO – LIVE IN PARIS 1975 (DMG) (Archival, but never released)
.THE BOTH – THE BOTH (SUPER EGO)

I also liked stuff by Eno/Hyde, David Kilgour, The Above, GBV, Dean Blunt, and there is much I didn’t hear, including Sleaford Mods, Sun Kil Moon, Kasai All-Stars…

Reissues: Gun Club, Pop Group, Destroy All Monsters.

Movies: IT FELT LIKE LOVE, BLUE RUIN, CHEAP THRILLS, UNDER THE SKIN, IDA, PALO ALTO, THE TRIP TO ITALY, CAPTAIN AMERICA-THE WINTER SOLDIER, LOCKE, NIGHTCRAWLER, WE ARE THE BEST, CALVARY, THE GUEST, LE WEEKEND, BIRDMAN, THE LEGO MOVIE.

This is where I usually do my “I don’t get it” spew, but I don’t feel like it today. If you really want to know, ask me when you see me.
