Jeff Schwartz Poop 2013

PoOp 2013 as delivered by Jeff Schwartz from Green Brook……

So the recordings listed below from the year twenty thirteen allowed for much toe tapping, head bobbing, songs sticking in my head and pleasantly holding my mind hostage, music that begged to be sung out loud at the top of my lungs (while alone of course in my car a scary sight for one to visualize be glad none of you had to be subjected to that), and overall what I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this past year….I offer this to you in a most pleasant, to the point, form of minimal pontitication of swill, leaning more toward a might I say “list-like” format with selected insight and observations….Gentlemen!, Ladies! Thou giveth das poop!

Buy Sound City - Real to Reel New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Sound City – Real to Reel …..Josh Homme + Dave Grohl GENIUS!, add in Reznor, Alain Johannes and Chris Goss, brings the needle on the meter up to the PURE BRILLIANCE setting. I’ll take a full album of those 5 please, in fact make it a double album. Add in the solid efforts from a couple of rock fossils like Stevie & Springfield, and you’re good to go. Leave it to Grohl…never mediocre.

Buy Queens Of The Stone Age - Like Clockwork New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Queens Of The Stone Age – Like Clockwork….. I know some of you saw this coming, don’t be surprised,…they’ve grown up and matured as we all have, while the days of kyuss & rated r like riffs have dwindled, it’s refreshing to see how they’ve grown musically just as much as the songwriting. Don’t get me wrong, still head bobbin’ for sure, Josh will not let you down on that mark, just a more sophisticated bob if you will. How the hell did they manage to get sir Elton involved? While the old stuff still stands up 15 years later, the new stuff is like a good wine, they are aging gracefully.

Buy Portugal the Man - Evil Friends New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Portugal the Man – Evil Friends….. So while I’m just discovering this band, late to the party as l often am and have been accused of, yes it’s cliche’ but the songs stick in your heed & you can’t get them out, no matter what you do. Not sure if it’s the great songs, lyrics, melodies, or the effects and production Danger Mouse put on it, but Whatever it is, it works and I’m drinking the Kool-Aid down happily, hence it’s listed here on the poop. Lyrics are whimsical, but work in the
songs.

Buy Arctic Monkeys - AM New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Arctic Monkeys – AM……. Wow!!! Great record. So I’ve been gawking at this band for many years, but was not ready to bite on their brilliance, but after AM, on board 110%. Great songs, of course knowing that Josh Homme has some kind of affiliation and is on the record never hurts, but the songs are great on their own, even without the Homme factor. “Arabella” is so S-T-R-O-N-G. A great rock band!

Buy Neil Young - Live at the Cellar Door New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Neil Young – Live at the Cellar Door…..-..Vintage? Classic?, Perfect?, Prime Time?, at his best?, what else do you want me to say to describe it? Love the comical between song chatter as only Neil can deliver. The song selection is great and love the version of “Cinnamon Girl” on piano – “that’s the first time I did that song on Piano”, “Don’t let it bring you down” is also amazing.

Buy Kurt Vile - Walkin on a Pretty Daze New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Kurt Vile – Walkin’ on a Pretty Daze……with a 9 minute 30 second title track, ok in! “Shame Chamber” unbeatable as well. Didn’t know what to expect but this one got my attention quickly.

Buy Savages - Silence Yourself New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Savages – Silence Yourself… l hate to say it but I’ve been let down from the last PJ HARVEY record, why would I say that here? Say it isn’t so, He’s going to compare one artist to another, no! Well here l go, don’t say l didn’t warn you… this one vocally and musically “at times” really gives me glimpses of “early” PJ Harvey so take what l can get. Let me go “on record”, no pun intended to say that it’s nowhere near the talent Polly can offer, it fills a void she left behind. So to talk about this release on its own merit, I’d say “shut up” & “she will” stand out. Everyone says Siouxsie & Bauhaus, honestly I was never a fan of those, but I am of this.

Buy Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made up Mind New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Tedeschi Trucks Band – Made up Mind……. Stumbled across this record & glad I did. I was pleasantly surprised. It highlights many guests such as Gary Louris, Doyle Bramhall II, Eric Krasno, John Leventhal & more. While I hate to compare, “oh no, here he goes again comparing artists to one another”, I have to mention that Tedeschi IS the new Bonnie Raitt, just a smidge different, and I know I will get slammed for that comparison, but come on now….really am I that far off? Hey! It’s a high form of a compliment, I like Bonnie Raitt.

Buy Black Angels - Indigo Meadow New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Black Angels – Indigo Meadow… . ….love the “FUZZZZZZZZZZZZZ” good catchy songs, with thought out lyrics, well sometimes. Overall a nìce offering.

Buy Avenged Sevenfold - Hail to the King New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Avenged Sevenfold – Hail to the King……Ok, yes I know many who say Metallica rip off,…Guns n Roses rip off….alI I can say is Metallica endorses this band so if they’re ok with it, I am too. YES I get it! I see the similarities in songs, vocals, but I cannot deny it, it’s good, the songs are good, its metal baby! You got a problem with that?

Buy Black Sabbath - 13 New or Used via Amazon   Buy New or Used via Amazon
Black Sabbath – 13……….WOW!, not sure if I should say worth the wait, as it’s been a long time coming, but ok l will say it. At least they didn’t phone it in, and delivered the goods….guess Rick Rubin would not put up with any bullshit nor put his stamp on any schlock. The bonus disc also isn’t filler instead it’s KILLER! Saw them live this past summer as well, they fucking nailed it. Ozzy Rules!l!!!!!!! As does Geezer & Tony. The songs really stand up.

There! I gave you eleven, as Nigel Tufnel (great stage name) would say “this one goes to 11”. If you don’t understand this reference you shouldn’t be writing or reading the poop, unless you are under 18 and or just climbed out from under a rock, then you get a pass…..otherwise go ahead & google “Nigel Tufnel” and enjoy the brilliance that Rob Reiner gives you.

Happy & Healthy 2014 to all……
