Jamie Hosley Poop 09

09 was an interesting year. Since this is my second year of POOP I did a better job of noting what I listened to throughout the year and managed to actually get a larger list together this time around. These albums are in no particular order, they are just the 10 that I came back to the most often over the course of the year in general.

1. Illinois: The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe
I referenced this album last year, at that time only a few “chapters” were available, finally this year the album was released in its entirety, it’s good and Illinois continues to do what I like about them best, moving through different styles while still maintaining a voice all their own.

2. Gomez: A New Tide
I really enjoyed this album from Gomez, a band that I’ve been into for quite some time. This album seems more polished than some past efforts and it could be said that it leans a bit more toward the poppy side of the house than previous albums but overall a good solid album that shows this band has staying power.

3. Port O’Brien: Threadbare
A great album and if I were to pick a favorite among the ten this would be it. Tracks have a great ebb and flow and very haunting vocals.

4. Frightened Rabbit: Quietly Now
Great melodies with solid vocals, all rolled in a Scottish brogue.

5. The Boxer Rebellion: Union
Another solid album that I really enjoyed, great melodies.

6. The DoDo’s: Time to Die
Another band that I’ve enjoyed following from their first album, essentially a two piece, musically though you wouldn’t know it. Tracks have a real west coast California feel.

7. The Deep Dark Woods: Winter Hours
They are exactly that, deep and dark, great music for a cold winters night.

8. …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead: Century of Self
Self important “big” rock, glad to see that someone is continuing to pull this stuff off.

9. The Flaming Lips: Embryonic
The Lips back to being the Lips, nary a yeah, yeah, yeah in sight. Reminded me why I liked this band so much in the first place.

10. The Mountain Goats: The Life of the World to Come
Every track based around a different book of the Bible, amazing lyrics and great musicianship.
